History

In the late 1970s, Atascocita was just beginning to emerge as a community. FM 1960 was a two-lane road, homes were sparse, and there was no local fire department. Emergency services were provided by neighboring Humble—until local residents stepped forward to change that.

Driven by the need for faster, community-based emergency response, a group of Atascocita residents formed the Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department in 1978. Funding came directly from the community through grassroots efforts, including recycling drives and voluntary utility-bill contributions. Those efforts led to the purchase of the department’s first fire engine and the construction of its original station at Farmingham Road and Walden Forest Drive—now Fire Station 19.

As Atascocita grew, so did the department. In 2001, voters approved the creation of what is now Harris County Emergency Services District No. 46, providing a stable funding source to support expanding operations. Additional stations were built, apparatus modernized, and training standards elevated to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population. In 2017, the department transitioned from a predominantly volunteer organization to a combination model staffed primarily by paid career firefighters.

Today, the Atascocita Fire Department responds to more than 8,000 calls each year and holds an ISO Class 1 rating—placing it among the top one percent of fire departments nationwide. AFD provides all-hazards emergency services across 25 square miles of unincorporated Harris County, serving more than 80,000 residents from three fire stations staffed 24/7.

Our capabilities include Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ambulance – level emergency medical services and advanced fire suppression, supported by a fleet of four MICU ambulances, three fire engines, and one ladder truck.

While Atascocita has changed dramatically over the decades, our commitment remains the same: protecting our community through professionalism, preparedness, and service—rooted in the same grassroots spirit that built this department from the ground up.
